Aeroporti de Milano Malpensa is one of three airport's serving Milan. Located approximately 30 miles west of Milan, it takes around fifty minutes to reach the airport by car due to older road systems and congestion. Italian government intended for Milan Malpensa Airport to handle only international flights while the Milan Linate Airport would handle only domestic flights, but this had led to problems. The European Commission disagreed with this change and the switchover became stalled. For now, all three Milan airports handle both domestic and international flights.
Milan Malpensa Airport does not receive the most passengers statistically, but it does handle the largest number of international traffic and cargo flights. The airport is best reached by train that runs directly from the airport to Milan Cadorna Station and takes around forty minutes. For those who smoke, Milan Malpensa Airport is totally non-smoking, so smokers will need gum or nicotine patches to handle long layovers. The airport posts stiff warnings against smoking inside and outside the building, and fines are doubled or tripled if someone is caught smoking around a pregnant woman.
Directions
Aeroporti de Milano Malpensa takes a little time to reach. There are plans to update the interstate system, but for now the roads are generally congested throughout the day requiring extra travel time during rush hour. The A8 and A26 both travel past the airport, as does the SS336. Drivers can take either highway or state road and follow airport signs. Eventually, the A4 (Milan-Turin Highway) will be linked to the airport as well.
Terminal 1
Terminal 1 is the larger of the two airport terminals and the newest. Terminal 1 opened in 1998 and can handle upwards of 25 million passengers per year. The terminal sits in behind the railway station and is surrounded on three sides by short-term and multi-level parking garages. The majority of Milan Malpensa Airport's domestic flights are handled by Terminal 1, and most of the international flights fly in and out of Terminal 1 as well. There are two satellites handling the traffic for Terminal 1-Satellite A handles flights within Europe, while Satellite B handles all international traffic. There are plans for a third satellite in the next few years. Check-In is located on the 1st floor (above the basement level) and then passengers travel through security before reaching the majority of all shops, restaurants, and services.

Terminal 2
Terminal 2 handles all of the airport's charter flights and a few international runs also. Located approximately eight minutes from Terminal 1, passengers must use the free airport shuttle to transfer from one terminal to the next. Terminal 2 has been renovated and contains many modern conveniences, but most passengers feel that Terminal 1 offers better shopping and restaurants. Check-In is located on the ground floor and then continues to security before passengers reach the majority shops, restaurants, and services.
