Terminal renovations are ongoing and hoped to be finished in 2008. When the new terminal is completed, the older terminal will be torn down and then the runways will be improved. Ottawa International Airport serves destinations as far away as Paris, London, or Cuba and as close as Montreal, Iqaluit, or North Bay. With over thirty destinations, passengers can often reach their dream destination with ease. In 2006, passenger counts neared four million people making it one of the busiest years in history. With renovations nearing completion, feelings are strong that the airport will continue to see incredible growth.
Located six miles south of downtown Ottawa, the airport is easy to reach by car or public bus. Allow around half an hour to reach the airport in heavy traffic. In summer of 2006, Ottawa International Airport closed all smoking lounges due to new laws. Smokers will need to plan accordingly because smoking is not allowed on the airport grounds.
Directions
Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport is easily reached from any area in Canada. Those coming from the west should take Highway 417 South and take the Hunt Club Road West exit. Turn east onto Hunt Club Road and head towards Uplands taking the right onto Uplands. Take the right onto Airport Parkway and follow airport signs.
Travelers coming from the east will take Highway 417 and take the Walkley Road exit. Follow Walkley Road west to Airport Parkway taking the left turn after the bus station. From this point, follow airport signs.
From downtown Ottawa, drivers will take Highway 417 and get off at the Bronson Avenue South exit following signs to reach Airport Parkway. Drivers can also take Highway 416 to Highway 417 and then follow directions found above or venture onto the Prince of Wales Drive and then take a right onto Hunt Club Road.
Main Terminal
The main terminal consists of a long hallway sitting in front of a rectangular building. With three floors, the airport is spacious and well designed. The 1st Level is dedicated to arrivals and baggage claim. The second floor contains all of the security checkpoints, some airport gates, and holding areas. Finally, the 3rd Level is where the check-in counters and more airport gates are located. There are more than two dozen gates in all and three runways, enough to keep air traffic moving nicely.
