A pleasant, genteel town in the south of France, Aix-en-Provence is known for the thermal springs from which it takes its name, its many fountains, its temperate climate, and its importance as the home of numerous artists and writers. Aix-en-Provence was founded in 122 BC by the Romans and became the capital of the country of Provence during the Middle Ages. In the 12th century, it became a center of culture and learning for southern France, a reputation which it maintains to this day as the home of numerous educational institutions and museums.
