Plus: Easy to pickup, friendly sales staff, and the car was clean and reliable.
Plus: I love my hire car I was given a 5 door Ford ECO sport far better than expected. Lots of room for our cases and golf clubs.

Plus: Picking up the vehicle was easy and we were treated well. The staff at the pick up area was helpful and friendly.
Minus: Returning the car was not as smooth as the pick up. The staff members tried to make us sign a paper assuming responsibilities for damage to the front left wheel. We refused to sign because the "damage" they claimed the wheel suffered was barely visible. We felt targeted.
Plus: Bad initial experience. The car was supposed to carry 5 people and carry 2 suitcases. It was 1.1 litre inderpowered (hyundai?) and barely suitable. The car battery was dead and car hsd benn previously jump started. Needed replacement vehicle. Lost 2days of holiday as a result but new car excllent
Minus: Avis Strand office at Somersetwest responded excellently in providing replacement car but CT airport should never have allowed the first substandard car to have been issued.
Plus: Staff at avis was really friendly. Car they gave me has less milage on it.
Minus: When car was handed over to me was not clean and had no floor mats inside.
Plus: Everything was great except that I cant figure out how to access my final receipt.

Smooth sailing
Plus: I liked walking into a busy office with a long line and walking right up to the preferred customer desk. It was an amazing feeling. Checkin was quick and easy, our car ran smoothly on a long road trip. When we returned it we didn't have to even go inside. We were met outside right away. Great experience.
Minus: Our car had an awkward luggage cover up that we were constantly battling. A quirk of the Toyota Avanza I suppose.

Plus: Car was reasonable and the same as the price quoted when we reserved.. We were allowed to use our credit card insurance and service was quick when picking up even though the office was very crowded that evening..

Avis Cape Town is too focused on very minor scratches--causes worry
Plus: I rented a minivan/people carrier. It was a low-end model that was small compared to the category rented, but was good value-for-money. I would rather save money than have a "luxury" model minivan with extra bells and whistles. The car fit 7 people (only with no luggage) or 5 people with luggage. Would have been better if the advertisement made that clear, because it said 7 passengers and 4 pieces of luggage, but in truth it's EITHER 5 passengers + 4 pieces of luggage OR 7 passengers and no luggage.
Minus: When I picked up the car, Avis asked me to note every scratch on the car. This made me nervous, because I cannot control if someone parks next to me and opens their door into the car making a small scratch. Luckily, during our 12-day rental this did not happen. But when I returned the car, Avis was very, very focused on every little tiny scratch again, and they made me feel like they might charge me for scratches, even if I did not make them. They should allow for normal small scratches without making the customer feel threatened.
Minus: First car broke down. The replacement car was satisfactory.
Plus: Good pick up to take us by golf cart into the office from arrivals. Everything ready, good service,no complaints

Plus: The staff had to make efforts to explain the extra money they charge...and its very uncofortable to accept the explanation, and unacceptable, once I'd payed for the rental and insurance previously! It was a bad holiday begining...
After this experience, I'm checking my VISA account all the time, to verify the expected refund.
The drop off was ok.
Minus: You must change the way of doing business. More clear, transparent and balanced value for money.

Minus: We waited for an hour and 45 minutes for our car. This has been our experience the last few times we’ve used Hertz. No apologies or discounts.
Minus: Well, the car had too many smart features, which were annoying.
Plus: Gentleman behind the counter was very knowledgeable, helpful and professional.
Minus: Drop off location signs were a little confusing.
Plus: Nothing, I never picked up the car.
Minus: Nothing. I never picked up the car.
Minus: Pick up at night. Lot not as well lit as I would have preferred going into unfamiliar country.
Plus: It was a quick process and the car was great!
Minus: When I'd call for help over the phone, I was constantly being transferred to different people and having to reexplain what I needed.
Minus: Queue for pickup took a bit of time.
Plus: The car I received was well worn, lots of dents etc, but at least no one wanted to steal it since it was in such poor condition.
Minus: I expect more from Hertz, this more like a car you would get from some unknown rental company.
Minus: Hertz had overbooked, which in general was understandable given the holiday season, but the staff did not explain this to us until 30 minutes after we had waited in line, and they asked that we return the next day but could not guarantee that a car would be available. We ended up renting from another car agency at the airport which was also overbooked but was able to find a car for us.

Minus: Check-in was slow; the car was not ready. I kept getting estimates of “10 minutes” but well over an hour was spent waiting for the vehicle. Unprofessional.
Minus: Wating for rental and having argued about sketches on the wheel we didn’t made.

Impossible to contact
Minus: Another driver hit our rental car while in Madrid. Thrifty kept over 500 Euros for the damage until the other driver's insurance. I have been calling and emailing Thrifty Madrid for 2 months and have not yet spoken to a human being, even though the insurance claim was already paid.
Car was not quite what it was supposed to be.
Plus: It was an adequate substitute.
Minus: It was old, scratched, dented and not very clean. The back lock was broken.
You can't help a customer a key locked in the car?
Plus: Pickup and Dropoff was fine. The vehicle was more or less what we expected.
Minus: I needed some help when I accidentally locked my keys in the truck of the vehicle. I realize this is my fault, but the staff lied and told me someone was en route to assist me. Further they told me I would receive a call from the manager. Nearly two hours after requesting emergency assistance, I received a call wherein I learned that Thrifty in SA does not unlock cars and I would have to do it myself. Thanks! I would have loved to have that information two hours prior. Foreign country, unusual circumstances, unhelpful/rude lying staff. Will not rent here again.

Minus: My car wasn't read at time of rental, there was an issue booking through Kayak as a third party booking service. As a result, instead of having an SUV, I was given a base model pick-up. Dollar was very good about changing it out the next day, but only after I had to make several phone calls and be available for an exchange, which impacted the plans for my vacation. Lastly, I have a charge on my credit card that occurred several days after my issue free return, for which I have been unable to get an answer for. Tank was full, no tickets, and no other issues upon return, so I an still waiting to learn why I have an extra charge.
Minus: Never actually rented the car. After waiting 3 hours (arrived at 9am) for a car, we decided to cancel a reservation. Multiple other people cancelled as well. Staff were friendly, but disorganized and had zero concept of time to expect car.

Do NOT rent from Dollar or Thrifty - Bad customer
Minus: The rental was done by Thrifty. They did not have the car that we reserved at the time we arrived. They gave us an upgrade, but wanted it back the next day. We were driving four hours East and the car could not be picked up. So we arranged to have it picked up at our next stop 2.5 hour away at the air port.
That morning I received a call and arranged that we could exchange the car between 5-6 pm at the house. We had to go out of our way to be back at the hotel at 5 we waited until 5:45 gave them a call and they said that they would send someone out, it would take 2.5 hours. We had dinner reservation at 6:30 so that didn't work They finally answer the phone, and said they were too busy to answer the phone.
The next day we gave up and drove the car back to the airport to return the car.
Phone Call = $50
Time lost from our vacation = 5 hours
