Great location and clean room Tiny room
Good location There's a smoking floor and they will try to put you in a smoking room even when you booked nonsmoking. Not that it matters, you can smell the smoke throughout the hotel. Bed was like sleeping on a floor
The buffets in the restaurant were good. The finish was peeling off the bathroom surfaces, and I woke up with a rash everywhere my skin had been in prolonged contact with a pillow case.
I stayed at The Kyoto Royal Hotel and Spa for my first trip overseas as well as my first trip to Japan. Some of the cultural differences where noted such as heights of sinks, counter tops, and showers. The room I stayed in had a Double Semidouble-deluxe bed. It was in fact 1 bed and was comparable to a full/queen size. I thought there would be two. The bed could sleep for two I suppose. The room I had was just enough to accommodate myself. Seeing as I am a minimalist and being a lone traveler, this worked out fine for me. The hotel is right next to a subway station, river walk, and market the next block over. I highly recommend getting the breakfast buffet included with your room. It is totally worth it! The Prandina does a excellent job with both food and staff. Food is excellent with a wide variety of choices. You have the option to eat local foods or foods that you would eat if you were back home. The food presentation is wonderful and is replenished very quickly. Hotel staff is very friendly and are very professional. Hotel staff also opens doors for you when getting out of the taxi! No need to walk far for access to transit or taxis, Taxis are ready available once outside the hotel lobby and bus stops are right outside the hotel as well. You will just need to know what bus or train to take (research that to death before you go! It can be overwhelming and you will probably get lost at some point). I believe bike rental is available at the front desk as I saw the same bikes everyday. I did have a local friend visit me daily as I toured the city. She traveled by bike and the hotel stored her bike in their storage free of charge while we were out in a separate location from the fore mentioned bikes. Also, if you are flying back home from any of the Osaka Airports, the hotel can request for a shuttle service to pick you from the hotel up to 1 day prior by 12:00 noon at a cost to you, which you must pay the driver at the time of pick up, The cost will vary by service provided and service rendered. I do hope this review is helpful to someone and, Yes! I will stay there again on my next trip to Kyoto, Japan.
The location is perfect to walk to restaurants, shops, buses & subway trains. The staff and accommodations were outstanding. The price was very reasonable. They charged extra for two beds rather than a king.
We were a group of 5 adults traveling throughout Japan. The Kyoto Royal Hotel offered great convenience, but the rooms are very basic and smaller, and the bed cozy for me and my 6'3" husband. The concierge was absolutely very accomodating, but there was a bit of a language barrier, so just be sure to ask a lot of questions to ensure you understand! I would return there. Good value. Huge breakfast buffet.
The location was great, the coin laundry was helpful, people were very friendly Small room, couldn't even open a suitcase. They said it was air conditioned, but it was just some blower. At least we could open a window. Even though it was a non smoking room, it had some smell. No room safe. It was billed as a superior double ... that means 1 bed jammed into the corner. I had to crawl over my husband to get out! Would not stay there again.
3 stations away from Kyoto's main subway/train station. One exchange needed
Nice staff No hot water for showering. I opened the window and got all the smoke from 1 level lower. Breakfast buffet so/so.
Clean room, spa service was excellent! Staff was super helpful. Convenient location.
Big surprise was that the water is from a spring under the hotel! Smaller room than expected but had all the expected amenities. Great location to downtown, Nishiki market, Gion, Arashiyama. Pictures made rooms look bigger. Staff weren't very knowledgable about traveling to Narita, but we got great info from the travel office next door and JTB in Nishiki market.
One of the few hotels where the staff speak English. Extremely friendly/helpful staff. Close to a subway station and Gion district for shopping/food. Nice bathroom products.
We loved almost everything about the Okura! Staff were very attentive and helpful with navigating for non-Japanese speaking guests. Facilities were in great shape. Insure dining had both local and international options. Subway access via basement connection and hotel shuttle to/from train station. So many amazing sites to see from there and tour company picked up at hotel. Much of dining, as seems common in Good hotels in Japan, is fixed price. We found two good options, Merry Island(Italian) and a noodle house that I do not remember the name of, in easy walking distance.
It is conveniently located for shopping and public transportation. Service is excellent. There is nothing I did not like about the hotel. I would love to stay again!!!
Location The air conditioner in our room was broken. They couldn't fix it and offered no compensation for it. The rooms and main hallways were stuffy and filled with smoke.
Location was excellent, close to making shopping area. Big room for Japanese standard. Staff not very friendly. Limited English with some staff. Concierge overwhelmed with people. Perhaps 2 at the desk would help. Very strict check out policy. Was not given a copy of my bill because I made the reservation over KAyak.
Very clean, with very hospitable staff in central city location, Easy walking to lots of shopping and to subway and train stations. Many restaurants in the atrea with first class restaurants in the hotel.
Great service that can be expected from the Okura brand. Was unexpectedly upgraded to a large room. Good location. Nothing.
location bathroom decor outdated, bedding a bit too hard
Lovely staff, very helpful. Hotel seemed oriented towards the business traveller and more for the older Japanese population. That said, it was a very good, very comfortable hotel. Good value!
I appreciate the position and the room comfort
We loved staying here. My only complaint is that it cost additional money to use the pool, if you chose to use the pool, and more importantly, that you had to be 18 years old to use the pool at all. My wife and I were traveling with our 9-year-old daughter, so none of used the pool because our daughter was too young. This was a huge downer, because Kyoto is very hot in August and we would have welcomed being able to cool off in the pool. By contrast, the hotel we stayed at in Tokyo (The Park Hyatt) had no age restrictions on pool usage (or usage fees) and we used the pool twice a day. Other than the disappointment about the pool, the Kyoto Hotel Okura was a total delight and perfectly located and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating, and the free shuttle too and from Kyoto Station was a welcome surprise. The pool cost money to use. And you need to be at least 18 to use it. This was a huge disappointment since we were traveling with our daughter, who is 9.
Excellent location spacious rooms accommodating staff Lower floor rooms needs refurbishing
Very nice hotel. Highly recommended from a world traveler.
It's fine for a three star, but you are paying for five star which it doesn't live up to. It's tricky one hostess was very helpful and another one yelled at us for canceling a cab, it was very strange. The beds are so hard, it was terrible. Also they don't have a bag room so the lobby is absolutely filled with bags because of all the tour groups. Also bar extremely overpriced. Overall it is extremely overpriced for what you get. Use that same amount and go stay in one of the traditional hotels in the cute part of town.
Great location! Easy access to bus lines and subways. The bathroom is quite large relative to the room size. Effective use of space. They can store your luggage for you free of charge if you arrive early. I did this and it was a huge lifesaver. No minibar, but I never use that stuff anyway.
Great location, easy access to the primary tourist locations in Kyoto. The room was a bit small (by western standards), but comfortable nonetheless.
Superb quality, central location, great value You can hear street noise through the closed windows including club music until 5 in the morning.
This hotel felt almost brand new and for the price, it was an amazing value. I was staying at other value hotels in the area but when I found this hotel I thought I would give it try based on ratings. I was not disappointed - it had a feel of a medium priced hotel in the US (think Hilton or Marriott) but I paid closer to the lower range of a budget hotel. Granted, I am not going during peak season. The interiors was luxurious and everything felt new. I would stay here again, hands down. It's a bit hard to find because it's in an alley way and generally signage is hard to see anywhere in this part of Kyoto. Be prepare to have your gps on to find this spot.
Elegant design, classy rooms and amenities, attentive staff. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay especially the onsen/ spa, which was a real treat after long sightseeing days in Kyoto. Location is excellent. Restaurant is nice, although lacking in continental cuisine. Fitness/ gym centre would have been a plus.
So much of your experience of Kyoto is where you are staying. I am so glad I changed hotels to stay at the Ritz one night. The service is outstanding, the location is incredible, and I had one of the nicest spa experiences of my whole life. Staying here will be one of my top memories of my lifetime. Cannot recommend highly enough.
They woke us up at 7:50 to tell us about a restaurant we asked for breakfast recommendation. The room is too small, with to storage space for a couple, a view of "the city" looks like a slam, lack of a 5-star quality, yet the service was good.
The swimming pool. The price to value was very high and the hotel billed me twice accidentally.
Hotel Monterey Kyoto is located near Gion, the main shopping area in Kyoto, and walking distance to Maruyuma Park, Pontocho Alley, and Nishiki Market. It is a block from the Karasuma Oike station, which is only a few stops from the Kyoto Station. As a tourist, this hotel is well located, considering many of the temples are best reached via bus. Our room felt extremely clean with modern decor. Though space was tight, it was manageable for two people. Everyone we spoke to was very accommodating, polite and helpful. We never heard sounds coming from other rooms. No complaints!
The staff were very polite and eager to assist any way that they could The bed in my room - like the docor - dated to the 1970's. Ridiculous that you have to pay for use of the pool. The food is ridiculously expensive and sub standard. 600 yen for a cup of coffee and they poured less than half of a tea cup.
Great staff with probably the best english skills in Kyoto. They provided great service throughout our stay. Free shuttlebus to Kyoto station. The hotel is a bit old and the interior looks old and worn wth stains, etc. The hotel is located a bit far from the main streets with shops and restaurants. You need a bike or the subway to get home from the central part of Kyoto.
Big clean room at a very reasonable price. Friendly, helpful English speaking staff. Beautiful waterfall outside the bar area. Nothing.
Beautiful lobby, excellent location. good restaurant
The efficiency and kindness of the staff
The staff were very friendly and all seemed to speak excellent English. The location is great - a really charming neighborhood I'd never seen before. I didn't understand that there's another Mitsui Garden hotel just a few blocks away, and the taxi driver didnt' ask. He ended up taking me to the wrong one... Also, there's a Kyoto Garden Hotel right around the corner - a little confusing!
Location and boutique style. Very good value for money.
The single bed room is small, however there are plenty of gadgets for the customer. The location is close to the underground station which connects to the main railway station. the window view is poor. There is no sign post about the hotel and it just hides behind another building at a corner.
