Had a great massage, in the Spa, The only thing I was disappointed, was the temperature of the Jacuzzi out side, it was barely warm, I would have liked to have the pool outside, roof top, heated nicely, and the Jacuzzi, much hoter, other then that, it was perfect

Plus: Staff is very attentive. Supported me a lot with Birthday celebration and all requests. Nice quite location, big area, perfect if you like privacy. Fresh flowers and fruits in the room were highly appreciated.
Minus: To improve food: - Breakfast selection (too limited and the same each day), preparation quality of eggs/pancakes - Change tea – it’s not the level of 5 stars hotel to give cheap pockets tea - To propose fresh juice at least on the menu with additional cost. Currently for 6/7 euro you get juice from the box - Burger I ordered in the room was not nice, meat was not possible to eat (while another dish with tuna was nice) Swimming pool I would recommend to warm the temperature at winter to 28/30 degree otherwise it’s too cold.

Plus: This small hotel is a piece of paradise in Funchal. An oasis of tranquility set in a botanical garden near the centre of the city. As soon as you pass through the gates of the grounds the peace and space wash over you. The grounds are beautiful. All the staff are charming, friendly and very supportive. The food is excellent. Everything is clean and well maintained. The transfers from Funchal airport were arranged by the hotel and were faultless - about a 20 minute taxi ride. This is one of the very few places I've stayed where it is very difficult to find a negative comment. Strongly recommended - we will be back.

Plus: This is one of the most stunning properties I have ever stayed at. You are literally immersed in a botanical garden with beautiful trees everywhere. If you are tired and need a break from cities whilst having a city 2 minutes away - walking - this it. The staff is the most friendly and nice people I have ever come across. The lime mousse is a must.
Minus: Our room had a slight smell we are not sure if it was the wood or some ac thing. We didn't move as it wasn't massive but it wasn't great either. I think the pools could get an update.

Plus: It could not have been better from arrival and to departure. I travelled with my 16 year old daughter who had the best time. She went to the gym and spa every day. The staff were just exceptional and so friendly. My daughter got ill while she was there and the hotel staff were so kind and understanding. I will definitely be going back to spend time again at this amazing hotel. It was quiet, peaceful,the most beautiful location, I can’t recommended it highly enough.

Plus: Good real/old fashion luxury & service that seems to be disappearing on luxury hotels. It has top service, extraordinary comfort and top amenities. Also, great outdoor areas, swimming pools and ocean access. The front desk staff goes far & beyond to please your needs (a special thanks to the lady called Alice - if I recall her name correctly).

Plus: Fantastik vacker omgivning / trädgård så rofyllt. Mycket sköna sängar. God frukost det kändes som restaurangen längre bort hade lite större frukost men också mycket mer folk. Önskade jag hade bokat fler än 2 nätter men vi var på väg till Calheta. Den mörka långhåriga yngre tjejen i receptionen var så snäll och vänlig. Kan verkligen rekommendera detta hotell.

Plus: The Hotel is integrated in a bigger leisure complex, with 2 other Hotels. This means there is more pools (indoor, outdoor, deep, shallow,...) with gardens nearby and chairs and ocean views and bars and restaurants for everybody, kids included, without leaving the Hotel! Nice location, nice restaurants nearby and also inside the complex . We've tried 3 out of the 6 available. Very nice breakfast.

Minus: Too difficult to find a sunbed with shade. Many at the front have no parasols because of wind. It is ridiculous that all sunbeds are claimed with towels early in the morning by guests and then often they are only used for a couple of hours a day. It says that towels will be removed if not used but this doesn' t happen.

Plus: The complex of Portobay Hotels (3 are sharing facilities such as pools, spa, gym,...) ist great. We thought that the Eden Mar is at least from the outside the least fancy and nice one of them all. If this is true for the interior is something we cannot judge. The pool and garden area is great and we particularly liked that everything was perfectly clean, that the staff was friendly and the breakfast buffet (though not the quality of the coffee).
Minus: What we did not like in the first place was our room. It stated in the description that one either has a garden or a seaview, ours somehow faced the garden but we were on ground level and right in front of the shabby roof of one of the indoor pools. Unfortunately the view is not the only bad part, it is also a very dark and shady spot and the pool is a bit smelly. We had booked a two weeks stay (for a price which we, the hotel and BOOKING did not consider to be low-cost or money-saver) and felt mistreated which caused that we had a talk to the receptionist. The lady was friendly and understanding (all of them were), however told us that particularly those rooms are handed to people booking via BOOKING. It is easy to guess that we did not take this in as a good reason and were to our delight offered a different room which we then had and liked for the time of our stay. Until the end we saw nobody living in those rooms. Still: Sad that the first room was presented to us as we had paid a regular price and the hotel was far from being fully booked. We can not imagine anyone being pleased with the first room we got.

Plus: The hotel is great, but the gardens and the view from our room were simply amazing!! Pure heaven! We spent 5 days with our toddler and the stuff helped us feel more than comfortable every day. Everyone we met was very helpful and kind. The breakfast was delicious and the food in the italian restaurant is also very good.

Plus: Beautiful hotel in lovely setting. Rooms were clean and spacious and hotel even gave us a free upgrade.
Minus: Hotel restaurant a little chaotic at breakfast, perhaps a few more staff on hand would help. Walk into town although not far is steeply uphill on the way back although the hotel does offer a courtesy bus but we did not use it.

Plus: It was a quiet and serene garden property, and the staff was fabulous. It was a solid 20-25 min walk from the main restaurant scene, which likely contributed to its tranquility, but it felt a touch distant at times. We used it mostly as a central location to plan day trips, which worked out well with a rental car and free parking. Also, the on-site included breakfast as well as the reasonably priced dinner restaurant were great.

Plus: The Hotel was in an excellent location to visit Funchal and the surrounding area. The breakfast and restaurant food was of an extremely high quality, all topped off with the professionalism and attention to detail of the staff. The hotel management should be very proud of the way in which the hotel is run.

Plus: I loved the hotel itself. They've had a lot of attention to detail: furniture, gardens, everything! The room was massive and classy. The piano bar was really nice as well. Everything felt classy, really. I also used the spa and the service was good and personnel were attentive.
Minus: As a young female solo traveller I felt quite observed by the elderly couples staying in the hotel. Obviously it's got nothing to do with the hotel itself. There were also young couples and one with a children, that I saw. But didn't get to see other solo travellers, probably because of the type of hotel (5 stars, price, etc.). Also, the indoor swimming pool could have been heated and the water a bit warmer.

Plus: The communication between myself and the Hotel was unparalleled: kept me in the communication loop, tracked my plane (even though diverted for a day to Portugal), organized a taxi and sent me all the information I needed via email making it a very smooth check in. Room was in the new part of the hotel and the building had modern decor but traditional theme throughout. The staff bent over backwards to please me and nothing was ever too much trouble. The room was big having all the necessary appliances and in a good location (on a hill so easy to walk down to the Old Town but not so great to walk up). The room was also air conditioned and clean. Surrounding area was rich in colour and history
Minus: We had a garden view and it was great but there was a big tree blocking most of it. However, it gave us an excuse to go out and enjoy the view. Best advice would be to be on the top floor. The majority of the room flooring was made out of wood so you could hear the neighbours above us who weren’t that noisy but this was out of season could have been worse when busy.

Plus: An amazing welcome, even at 9pm with lots of useful information provided alongside a herbal tea and biscuits! Views of the garden, city and sea were stunning and the room had everything you could need, and more. Short walk into the old town with lots of places to eat and drink although you could also easily cook in the room if you wanted to. Breakfast is well worth the extra money and sets you up perfectly for the day. We ended up needing to book an extra night which required moving rooms and the staff were very accommodating so we weren’t room-less at all. Highly recommend.
Minus: Nothing! But if you did have mobility issues getting to and from the old town would be a potential challenge but personally, we loved wandering through the town.

Plus: Manuela, the kind lady who checked us in, couldn’t have done more for us. She talked us through her recommendations, what we should try to experience and everything in the room. Sylvia, the lady who attended to us for breakfast was again, incredible. The English language skills are impeccable. The location is undeniable. The bed and pillows were amazing. The dogs were incredibly cute and playful, no matter what time it is. Definitely go for the room with the private balcony; it’s absolutely worth it. We will come back when we are next here!!

Plus: The hotel is in a residential area which makes it special - most of the hotels are gathered at the other side of town. So you get a better feel for Funchal proper. Has a garage for car parking which was excellent. Interesting design primarily glass and plywood. Great courtyard overlooking town for evening drinks. Staff very nice
Minus: The breakfast wa poor value for money. The room, though nice, felt a bit cramped - we could not fully open our balcony doors. For some reaosn, the hotel had chosen to put 2 queen size beds in rather than one kingsize which just used up all the space.

Plus: The staff were all superb. Friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. It was a nice building in th old town, with good views. The outside space was nice, and we were able to take our own drinks and wine into the garden. The room was spacious, with plent of storage, a nice view, kitchen facilities and a large shower room.
Minus: Wifi connection was poor and this was frustrating. We thought that the hotel was very close to the old town, but it was quite a walk. Going was OK as it was downhill, but coming back was up steep hills and we had to take taxis as our friends were elderly. Cabs were cheap, though. The outside space was very nice, but didnt quite match up to thrives we had read. A pool would have been good.

Plus: Staff were friendly and very accommodating. We arrived early and the staff kindly let us check in an hour early, free sample of Madeira wine on arrival. The rooms were big, clean and comfortable, unfortunately we were unable to book a sea view room so out view was of the car park, which meant we didn't get much use out of the balcony but the balcony was big. The freshwater pool was lovely with plenty of sunbeds. It was my birthday on our arrival date, and came back to a delicious cake later in our room. With small cakes/biscuits/fruits left in the room everyday, nice treat to return to after a busy day exploring and walking. The hotel is approx. 35 mins walk from the center of Funchal, but lots of shops and restaurants surround the hotel. We had a great stay and would definitely return.

When we went to use the sauna and steam room, the receptionist on the spa told us that this was free with our room, which we were unaware of, so it would have been nice to have been told this upon check in.

Plus: We had the best stay here, the hotel was spotless and really nicely renovated, lots of space to relax and enjoy the sun - loved the sun deck terrace! Location was great also, just a bus ride to Funchal and actually we preferred staying slightly further away from the town as it was much more relaxing and beautiful views of the sea etc. A few highlights: - The swimming pool was also amazing and very clean! - The Italian restaurant Sal was delicious - Rooms were spacious and very clean and looked exactly like the photos, which I find some hotels don’t! - The staff were very accommodating, if we had any problems it was dealt with straight away - Hotel manager Jordao was absolutely brilliant, very friendly and helpful I would definately stay here again and recommend it to friends and family.

Plus: Number 15 was absolutely perfect for our needs. Although we had high expectations and had chosen with care, we were delighted with the accommodation. In the grounds of an old traditional house in the hills high above the old town, our studio had been imaginatively converted from a single storey cottage into comfortable, contemporary accommodation with all modern facilities. Spotlessly clean too with an extremely well-equipped kitchen you could actually cook in should you choose to do so! Lovely private roof terrace with views over the port and use of a 'bijou' pool at the front of the third building on the site which is a conversion of a small house into accommodation with 3 apartments. Hosts were excellent - great communication throughout - warm welcome, always accessible and lots of useful information to ensure our stay was trouble-free; we were allowed a late check out too which was much appreciated! Can't recommend highly enough and would definitely return!!
Minus: Not a negative as such: the location was perfect for us - being located in a residential area offers better immersion into the Madeiran way of life away from the busy tourist spots and you can park a car safely inside the boundaries of the property..... but you don't get such spectacular views without being above the town and It is on a steep hill so people should be mindful of that - no issue for us - we walked down (wear appropriate footwear!) and got a taxi back if we were going into town. Small point - and after all, such hills are hardly uncommon here!

It is ridiculous that all sunbeds are claimed with towels early in the morning by guests and then often they are only used for a couple of hours a day. Plus: The complex of Portobay Hotels (3 are sharing facilities such as pools, spa, gym,...) ist great. We thought that the Eden Mar is at least from the outside the least fancy and nice one of them all. If this is true for the interior is something we cannot judge. The pool and garden area is great and we particularly liked that everything was perfectly clean, that the staff was friendly and the breakfast buffet (though not the quality of the coffee).
Minus: What we did not like in the first place was our room. It stated in the description that one either has a garden or a seaview, ours somehow faced the garden but we were on ground level and right in front of the shabby roof of one of the indoor pools. Unfortunately the view is not the only bad part, it is also a very dark and shady spot and the pool is a bit smelly. We had booked a two weeks stay (for a price which we, the hotel and BOOKING did not consider to be low-cost or money-saver) and felt mistreated which caused that we had a talk to the receptionist. The lady was friendly and understanding (all of them were), however told us that particularly those rooms are handed to people booking via BOOKING. It is easy to guess that we did not take this in as a good reason and were to our delight offered a different room which we then had and liked for the time of our stay. Until the end we saw nobody living in those rooms. Still: Sad that the first room was presented to us as we had paid a regular price and the hotel was far from being fully booked. We can not imagine anyone being pleased with the first room we got.

Plus: We liked the comfort in the room, the view was perfect and the pool area is lovely. You get a lot of comfort, pillows were absolutely amazing for example. The garden around hotel is impeccable. there is a hotel bus that drives to the center of Funchal for free several times a day.
Minus: it was a bit boring, guests are quite old, so not really much reason to spend a lot of time in common areas. A bit stiff as well, maybe you have to be like that when you pay so much money. I would not recommend the breakfast in Gallo d'Oro. You get exactly the same food as in the Rose Garden, the only difference is that in Gallo you have to order it (and wait for it) while in Rose Garden, everything is already there so you just pick up the things from the buffet. I was a bit disappointed with fruit offer (not tropical fruits at all)

Plus: Faciliteterna: poolerna, trädgårdarna, möjligheterna att slappa, havets brus, storleken på hotellet - finns massor med mysiga ställen att ta det lugnt på, mängden gäster - hotellet kändes lagom fullt - lätt att hitta solstolar och en egen vrå, fågelsången, tystnaden, rummet. Mysigt med pianist och uppträdanden.
Minus: Utsikten från mitt rum. Jag hade bokat ett rum med sidoutsikt över havet och hade önskat en fin utsikt och en balkong i solen. Men det visade sig att jag var tvungen att stå upp för att se havet. Kontaktade receptionen och de hävdade att hotellet var fullbokat så att det inte fanns möjlighet för mig att få ett annat rum. Väldigt tråkigt! Jag gjort den här erfarenheten tidigare när jag har bokat på booking.com. Booking har bästa priset men man får tyvärr inte lika bra utsikt som de som bokat via hotellets egen hemsida. Sen kände jag mig också obekväm när jag åt middag som ensamresenär i bistron på hotellet. Fick ett bord längst ut och kände mig utanför och uttittad. Det var få ensamresenärer överhuvudtaget på hotellet. Jag tyckte inte heller att frukosten var nog lyxig för ett så fint hotell.

Plus: We were very happy to be upgraded to a sea view room. The location of this hotel is perfect: right by the sea and not too far from the town centre (35 minutes walk or use the free hotel shuttle bus) or go by taxi. The breakfast was excellent with lots of choice and beautiful view from the breakfast room. We also had a buffet dinner in the hotel once (Italian night) and it was perfect as well. If you don’t want to eat in the hotel there are lots of restaurants around. They have activities every day including free Madeira wine testing on Wednesdays which we unfortunately missed as it was fully booked. They provide you with the list of all the activities and yours at check in. The staff at the hotel is excellent and very helpful. To name a few: Louise, Mauro who was on stand by whilst I was swimming in the Atlantic Ocean (a fantastic experience not to be missed!) and Marina who does excellent massages. The swimming pools, sauna, jacuzzi and a steam room - all very very good. We look forward to going back to this hotel in October!

Pestana Carlton Madeira Ocean Resort Hotel ligger centralt i Funchal, en fem minuters bilfärd från både Museum CR7 och Funchal Marina. Plus: Location is great, breakfast is good with lots of choice, the a la carte restaurant (weekends only) is also very good. There is live music and a bar in the evening. Staff were always friendly and helpful. We were very kindly offered a one night exchange to bungalow house in another location (North West of island) free of charge, which was also in a good location and a nice change of scenery. Swimming pools are also very nice, some next to the sea.
Minus: Room service (dinner) food quality was terrible. Breakfast room service did not arrive the first time. No new tea bags on the room, only instant coffee. (machine) coffee quality at breakfast is pretty bad. Some facilities close rather early. Room furnishing not new, esp. beds are not great quality. Room without a sea view is obviously less than perfect but that's expected.

Plus: There was a great selection of Breakfast items. The location was ideal for what we wanted to do during our stay. The reception staff were really friendly and exceptionally helpful. The waiters/waitresses were really friendly.
Minus: We thought the check out time could have been a little later as we had a later flight home.

Minus: This was the most noisiest hotel room ever. For three nights we couldn’t sleep even though using earplugs. Terrible noise until 5 am. The bed was terrible, gave back ache. Definitely not 5 stars. Half of the staff was kind, the other half almost rude. The outdoor pool was suppose to be heated but it was terribly cold, couldn’t swim at all

Plus: I stayed in this hotel for 3 nights. The room was at the 14th floor and the view was really nice (The sea views are breathtaking but even the mountain view is amazing). It was big enough - the bathroom was also big. The wifi was free and the connection was good in the various parts of the hotel. The breakfast was very good - big variety of food types (some vegan were also available). Great poll area. Nice location.
Minus: There were some stains in the carpet. The curtains were old enough. There were curtains in the bathroom dividing the bathub from the rest of the bathroom - not a glass screen.

Plus: Frukostbuffén var mycket bra!
Minus: Om de ska ha en tennisbana så borde den vara i betydligt bättre skick. Det var farligt att spela då underlaget hade trasat sönder på vissa ställen. Buffén på kvällarna borde ha hållit högre standard då det ändå rankas som ett femstjärnigt hotell.
